Starfleet Command

Postby el_flesh » Thu Sep 27, 2018 3:48 am

Got hold of a copy at GOG.com. I like it; it isn't bad.
I thought there were some mods for the ships making them appear more FASA like?
But I can't find any on a search. Does someone have copies of Orion Wanderers, Winged Defenders, etc?

You might try looking over at Nexus Mods. The only drawback seems that these mods are for SFC3, which GOG doesn't sell. So, I don't know if they'd work with SFC1.

There might be other related mods, but I'll let you search for them. ;)

Also, if those ships don't work for SFC2, SFC3 is available as abandonware.

I’ve eyed this from afar for years but never played it, in part because it sort of looked like a simplified, cut down version of KA where I can only maneuver in 2 dimensions. Any longtime KA players have any thoughts on whether any of the SFC games are worth playing? I have limited gameplay hours these days so if KA is better I’d rather spend them replaying it.

I've played both SFC1 & SFC2, but more of SFC2. They were ok, but nothing when compared to KA. The 2D aspect I didn't like either. Although, what I did like was that ships banked from left to right rather than KA's "stick up the butt" non-banking starships. Even Bridge Commander ships banked and looked graceful.

If KA had the same camera follow target chase view function like SFC and BC had, it'd be a hell of a better game. Unfortunately, the powers that be decided to only make that a feature when in gunnery mode, which is something I doubt many people ever used, and something I loathed because you had to rely on the dumb AI that couldn't pilot the ship worth a damn during a fire fight.

If you want to try SFC, go for SFC2. Although, watch some game play footage on YouTube before investing time and money. You can easily surmise whether or not it's going to be worth it or a pass. With some modding, I would enjoy SFC2 a lot more, but that's not going to happen.

Thanks! Anything else you didn’t like about SFC? Was the gameplay depth pretty similar to KA?

After you completed a certain amount of most of the missions, or while completing the missions up to a certain point, everything started getting repetitive. Then, there was the odd stuff. I remember some Klingon task force deep within Federation space that you had to battle. I thought, "Wait a second, how'd get that many heavy ships in here without tripping any Fed sub-space sensor systems or whatever the Fed would use?".

I didn't like some of the video arcade aspects of it. Although, other aspects of were good. Planets looked nice, asteroid fields didn't look like the chunky blocks they are in KA, etc. You're playing in a pre-defined map area with borders. Go outside of the borders and either your ship explodes or you lose the skirmish. There are no collisions.

I would have liked ST2:TWOK phaser sounds from the Fed ships. Although, some of the weapon sounds were pretty cool. Torpedoes could have looked and sounded better, but then I'm a purist, i.e. I like to see and hear in my Star Trek games what I saw and heard in the movies.

I think SFC was more mission centric than campaign centric, but I'm not entirely sure. Reading a wiki on it would give you more info. As you've probably already seen, GOG has SFC1 for $10. Whether or not a copy of SFC2 would run on W7 or W10, even if in compatibility mode, I don't know.

Were there any major systems or tactics or other things SFC modeled that KA didn’t have or was it a pretty similar level of depth?

It's been well over a decade since I played it and all the aspects and nuances didn't stick with with me memory wise. What I'd do is take a look at these YouTube search results for "starfleet command 2", see what's available, and find someone who is playing through it for several missions. Some actual game play footage should give you a feel for what it's like.

Game didn't turn me on much.
I'd rather play a modified version of Torgenson's FASA translation...
