Introduction

Date: August 3rd 2136ad
Location: Edge of the Sol System

At the outer reaches of the solar system, a collosal explosion tears apart the fabric of space. Amidst the blue and black mist of the tear, a dark grey ship rips out into normal space, rumbling past as it slows to a standstill. With another mighty explosion, the tear closes up and all is calm once more. The ship, a Terran Military Cruiser is on it's way home to Earth, the crown jewel of the United Terran Alliance.
The Cruiser, dark grey in appearance, barely visible from afar, is long hulk of a ship, but ominous and very powerful. She is one of the pride of the Alliance Space Fleet. Several large engines at the back and the sides of the ship can propel it to near light speeds, getting it to the otherside of a system in a day. At the front of its angular hull, on the only straight and smooth piece of plating available are the large black words Sword of Damocles and etched with silver, along with the logo of the United Terran Alliance. A Silver outlining is givien to the best of the fleet, while gold is reserved for the flagship of the fleet.

The Damocles, a Perseus class vessel, was sent on a mission to a system farthest from the Alliance's influence, to a highly prized planet named Sirius IV. Although it is way out of reach of the Alliance, it is an important outpost colony nonetheless, and needed to be protected at all costs, so the newly commisioned Damocles was sent to protect the population. At the time, the system was right inbetween two warring alien civilisations, one of which was a friendly and powerfull ally, the same however canot be said for their enemy. This mission was almost 15 years ago, and the war now ended, the Damocles tried contacting the Alliance, but after 5 months of waiting for a return reply which never came the crew decided to head home and see why no one was responding. Before heading out, the ship left a compliment of Rangers, the Alliances ground forces, and a few fighter wings, just incase. The remaining crew entered HyperSleep and began their 7 month journey back to Earth

Eve, the Artificial Intelligence of the ship, is in all sense of the word alive, and the ship is her body, she can feel every part of it through a vast network of sensors, and is able to operate the ship if need be without a crew. After navigating the ship through Hyperspeed from one part of the galaxy to the other Eve now has the duty of plotting a course to Earth Orbit for the ship to dock. The ships engines slowly lit up, and the manourvering thrusters set the ship facing the correct direction. With a crack the engines roared to full power and the ship moved onwards to its destination. It is Alliance protocol for ships larger than Police Cutters to enter and exit hyperspeed at the edge of a system, and travel the remaining distance by sublight drive.

HyperSleep is the only means of staying alive when travelling at Hyperspeed. The crew must enter a form of Cryogenic Stasis in order to shield their bodies from the overwhelming forces exerted upon the ship. Without HyperSleep, a human being would become part of the hull upon entering hyperspeed. In the vast cargo holds of the ship the 550 strong CryoPods and their remaining Ranger and Officer occupants lay closed and sealed. They however, wont be seeing the light of day until the ship has successfully berthed at a dockyard. The only pods that are to open are the Nigh****ch, located in a seperate part of the ship. 6 pods placed in a circle around a monitoring station, containing the Captain, the Commander, Ships Doctor, Tactical Officer, Chief engineer and Science Officer. The Nigh****ch crew are basically the babysitters of the ship until it reaches port, they check up on the ship and the other pods and ensure safety of the ship and sleeping crew.

stupid 10k char limit lol

-------------
Chapter One, Part One.
Out of the Ice Box, Into the Fire

The lights in the room began to flicker, and slowly illuminate to half light, as to not hurt the waking crews eyes. The pods began to open one after another, starting with the Captains. Cold air rushed out as the seals were broken, filling the room with a misty fog. Almost zombie like, the Captain rose from his pod and shakily grabbed the edge of the pod and lifted himself out with all his strength. As he stood on the floor, he bent over shaking then dropped to his knees. As he gasped for air he arched over and vomited a pink like liquid onto the grating on the floor. For HyperSleep travel, the user needs to breath in a liquid in order to prevent their lungs from collapsing, the liquid is oxygenated but only lasts for a short time when exiting the pod. Coughing, the Captain slowly and shakily stands and wipes his eyes, waiting for his vision to return. Soon after, the rest of the crew emerge from their pods, following the same routine, shake for abit, throw up, shake abit more.

"All Systems powered up and reurning to normal parameters, command protocols transfered to nigh****ch staff" - Eve lighlty said over the intercom. "Course plotted to lagrange point alpha, Ulysses Dockyard"

As she said this, a hologram of her head appeared in the air above the monitoring station in the centre of the pods.

"Did you all enjoy your journey ? I tried to keep the spacial turbulance to a minimum, but I guess you wouldnt feel it anyways being asleep and all"

Eve had been piloting the Damocles for 7months straight, and while she is the ships computer, she has her own personality, and apparently gets quiet lonely.

"I toyed with the idea of creating another AI to keep me company, but it turns out we dont have enough space in our systems for a second AI, shame really"

The crew, composing themselves abit more and beginning to get ready, started conversing with one another, picking up where they left off before entering the pods, and Eve chatted with the Captain informing him of everything she had done over the past 7 months, course corrections and pod management, among other things.

The Captain, Michael O'Rourke, had been commanding the Damocles since it was being constructed and oversaw the integration of Eve. He pretty much considered Eve to be real and never treat her as a second class being. The Captain was like that, and it is why the Alliance chose him as the commander to be protecting Sirius. He would be able to negiate alot better than most other Captains in the fleet with the two alien factions battling it out on the Frontier. While he is a kind and forgiving man, he can rise to the occasion and be a brutal adversary to any opponent daring enough to take him on. During the war with the Pirate Confederacy 30 years prior, O'Rourke had earned his stripes by successfully defending Saturn against invasion. He knows when to be friendly and when to be military man.

Lance Commander Julia Davis was picked by O'Rourke to be the XO of the Damocles. Davis had served abourd O'Rourkes fathers ship before it was decommisioned, and she came with high praise and recommendation. She was a hard as nails ex-drill instructor from the Academy, and she knew exactly how a ship should be run, and she stops at nothing to get what she wants. It was this quality that O'Rourke admired the most about Julia. She was a totally different person when off duty mind, which many found intriguing. She was raised by the Space Corps, as her father was an academy teacher also, as was his father, so she had military ideals in her blood. She is a very patriotic woman when it comes to the corps, and often tells others that the "Corps is Mother, and that you do as the Corps Says".

Medical Office Shane Skinner was your average doctor, surgically attached to his stephoscope, and always telling you how to look after your body. He was quite young, yet profoundly mature for his age, his friends often calling him an old man for how he talks and how he thinks. Very intelligent, and with a good bedside manner. Just how all doctors should be. He finished Med School top of his class and served on the Io Transfer Station for 2 years before opting to serve aboard Damocles. He wanted to see the frontier, and help people as much as possible. On a station of 60 people it wasnt exactly challenging, but out there on the frontier, he would really be able do what he dreamed. And he did, superbly, and was quite sad he was returning to Earth, but also excited as he could finally get his book published on 'Bacteria from the Frontier'.

Tactical Officer Lieutenant Cara Dylan was an interesting girl. Fresh from the Corps she came bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready to serve. A very admirable tactician, she could fight with the best of em, and served well during the mission to Sirius, catching a stealthed enemy frigate trying to sneak past defences. Not so bushy tailed now as she has been broken in by the military lifestyle, but is still keen and definatly bright eyed. A beautiful young woman, now married to Chief Engineer Sam Dylan, and often jokingly said to be the one wearing the trousers in that relationship. She is quite strict, learning her ways from best friend Cmdr Davis, but not suffering from twin personalities.

Chief Engineer Samson Dylan, probably the greatest engineer in the fleet, helped design the Perseus Series of Cruisers, and had a hand in cronstructing the Damocles. Requested by Captain O'Rourke to stay onboard for the mission, he glady accepted whe he saw Cara Willis was on the roster. He had met her in the academy one day when he was working on his designs, and fell in love. Although it wouldnt be until 2 years later he got the courage to ask her out, and finally marry her the year after, but it was a momentus occasion in his life, that day at the academy. The day he met his future wife, and got his designs acepted by the Council of the alliance. Sam Dylan, a shy yet amazingly romantic man, very intelligent and ambitious. Only a year older than Cara, he is the second youngest onboard, and as Chief 'of the boat' as he likes to say, has the honour of being 3rd in command.

Probably the greatest mind in the Alliance, Science Office Mackay Zelenka knows everything, and likes boasting the fact. The drive system and reactor used in the Damocles are his doing. A middleaged man blessed with the gift of knowing everything, once made a fusion reactor in school and was quickly scooped up by the Alliance to be apart of R&D. 25 years later and he designed the means for the Alliance to have a fast ship capable of utilising more power for weapons systems, making the Perseus class the most powerful in the fleet, and a formidable opponant for every known alien races ships also. He volunteered to be apart of the crew of the Damocles, to oversee the operation of the drive/reactor to see how well it copes over extended periods of time and because he would be the foremost expert on it should things go wrong so far away from Alliance dockyards, or so he says. Many believe he just wanted to get away from his ex-wife. He is a very talkative person, and while being so intelligent, oftain puts his foot in it when actually talking to people, and has a habbit of offending most people he meets.

After eating a small meal in the galley to get their strength back, and talking on end, discussing opinions of why they hadnt recieved contact from Earth at all while at Sirius, the crew headed up to the command and control deck, better known as 'C&C' or 'The Bridge' as Cmdr Davis likes to call it. She's very traditional at heart, and was quite opposed to not having the brdige atop the ship where you can see out into space. She liked being able to see a battle with her own eyes, rather than through a viewscreen and on a sensor map. The other crew however like where the bridge is, its closer to crew quarters and to the galley, which is a definate plus for some. Also the fact that it is at the centre of the ship, superbly protected by numerous layers of armor plating gives added comfort to them all, even Cmdr Davis.

"Sir im not picking up any flash traffic on the usual battle network frequencies" - Lt Dylan said to the Captain, who then walked to Lt Dylans station. Usually when in a main Alliance system, the Battle Network can be pretty much picked up by anyone, but only used if you have the right codes. Even if you didnt, you would still be able to know its there.

"Thats strange, we'd usually be inundated with crap from all over the system" The captain smirked

"Exactly, normally by now we would have pings from the deep space radar, authorisation requests from the defence outposts and be able to atleast pick up a news feed..but...nothing..its as if its not there"

"Could Earth be using a new transmission system, something we dont have ?"

"It is likely, but they would still keep older frequencies in operation, I mean they know we're out there and there are the Explorer's cut off out on the Rim too, they wouldnt just change over without keeping redundancies" Added Zelenka

"Hmm, then something could be wrong...keep checking all frequencies, try contacting the Saturn Contractors, they may know something, we're about near Saturn now arnt we Eve ?"

"We came into range of Saturn transmission 3 and a half minutes ago Captain" replied Eve, her face appearing on a screen near the front of the bridge "I'd like to point out that when we passed through the Epsilon system, I didnt pick up any traffic either, but that isnt exactly out of the ordinary for Epsilon Command"

"Yeh they only connect to the battlenet every 10 days. Which day was it you passed through ?" asked the Captain, who had now returned to his seat, with a very concerned look on his face.

"It shouldve been the day they transmit, but I may have been out of range"

"Well I find it very curious that on that occasion and now, we are unable to access the battlenet. And the fact that we hadnt heard from Earth in months when we were at Sirius... No, there must be something wrong." The Captain was getting quite tense, as were the other officers.

"Sir!!" Lt Dylan jumped "sir, this is strange, no one is responding to my hails. Ive activly pinged a request to all of saturn and nothing has came back, Ive even sent audio on all frequencies but sitll nothing"

"I dont like it" Davis responded "For the entire system to be silent...sure is one big suprise party..and I dont like suprise parties."

"Chief, activate full range sensors, get me a readout of the system" Requested the Captain. Scanning the entire sytem would bring back data on each planetary body and satelite, and would pick up all manmade structures aswell, so they can lock to them and send a signal

"Sir, recieving telematry...the course Eve has plotted will take us over the asteroid field after Jupiter and straight to Earth. According to this, there are no stations or docks near Earth, nor is the defense ring at Mars. Odd...there is no debris...no signs of any battle..how could they just be gone ?"
